This past Sunday morning I took a long bike ride (for me at least!) down the Arakawa River to Tokyo Bay.
The Arakawa River is one of the main rivers that flows directly through Tokyo and it happens to run really close to our apartment. There’s a fantastic path along the river that - although at times crowded - is paved smooth and perfect for biking.
With my new odometer / speedometer all hooked up - I clocked in about 65 kms in total. Not bad for an out of shape techie!
The path…
The panorama view of the bay at the end of the path (click for full size goodness)…
The view is totally anti-clamactic - especially on a grey day such as it was. To make things a bit more rewarding - you’ll notice a slight detour of my route to the other side of the river, where a ferris wheel resides. Turns out it’s Kasairinkaikoen - a great little park directly beside Tokyo Disney Land.
Next goal? A ride to Costco - another 30 mins or so down the same route - and I’ll celebrate with a jumbo slice of pizza!
Happy new year all. 2007 is turning out to be an entertaining one so far. Makiko & I took in our first Australian professional basketball game last night. Yes, Australia does indeed have it’s own basketball league called (originally enough) the NBL - National Basketball League. In actuality, it’s more than just national - it’s even more international than the NBA. The NBL has 12 teams in total - 10 of which are in Australia, and the other two being based out of New Zealand and Signapore. While it’s a pretty good sized league, the popularity of it is way behind that of the AFL and cricket.
None the less - I like basketball. I understand basketball. I can appreciate basketball. So, I wanted to see the local league first hand.
I bought us a couple of tickets online for the Sydney Kings vs. the Wollongong Hawks at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. At $60 a piece, it was a lot more expensive than a movie, but still cheaper than your North American equivalent. We had awesome seats - near center court, four rows back! I wouldn’t dream of buying such tickets in the States.
It was a good game, and I took lots of pictures, as well as a few videos. Experience the game for yourself…
Fantastic weather in Sydney this weekend. Huge improvement over the rain we got last weekend. Not only did it give us a chance to check out a great new little spot during our house hunting (check out Oatley!), but it also gave me a chance to play Ultimate at Coogee beach.
How cool is that?! I’ll tell you - it’s pretty cool. Yup.
Back in Canada - we’d play Ultimate in all sorts of weather - rain or shine. Here, even the hint of rain cancels it.
One of the leagues I’m in at the moment (Northern Suburbs League) has had nearly half of the games cancelled in the last 3 months. I just got an e-mail saying that tonight games are cancelled due to the rain we had on the weekend! Unbelievable. The sun’s out and everything now. Bunch of babies they are - the whole lot of them. I suppose that’s not the issue - and they want to keep the turf nice - but come on…
Frustrating. In arguably the driest country in the world - this shouldn’t be happening.
Big soccer game on tonight - Australia vs. Japan @ 11PM. It feels like the soccer game of my life!
People are going absolutely nuts over the World Cup here, since it’s been some 32 years since Australia’s been in it. Australia wouldn’t normally give a rats ass about soccer. I think the whole country will be up watching the games. In fact - the premier of NSW has asked employers to excuse workers for tardiness tomorrow if they were up late watching the game.
