This past Sunday morning I took a long bike ride (for me at least!) down the Arakawa River to Tokyo Bay.

The Arakawa River is one of the main rivers that flows directly through Tokyo and it happens to run really close to our apartment. There’s a fantastic path along the river that – although at times crowded – is paved smooth and perfect for biking.

With my new odometer / speedometer all hooked up – I clocked in about 65 kms in total. Not bad for an out of shape techie!

The path…

The panorama view of the bay at the end of the path (click for full size goodness)…

The view is totally anti-clamactic – especially on a grey day such as it was. To make things a bit more rewarding – you’ll notice a slight detour of my route to the other side of the river, where a ferris wheel resides. Turns out it’s Kasairinkaikoen – a great little park directly beside Tokyo Disney Land.

Next goal? A ride to Costco – another 30 mins or so down the same route – and I’ll celebrate with a jumbo slice of pizza!

Glad to hear you installed your cycling computer no problem. It’s much more fun knowing your stats isn’t it? That way you can celebrate your first 1,000km.

How was the bike road crowded? By bikes? Or by fools playing baseball standing around in the middle of the bike road?

    The latter…

At one point a kid even hit my bike with a foam ball! His father – standing right there – didn’t even say “gomennasai”! I’m guessing he was lost for words when he realized I was a foreigner. (“Gee – whats that English word for gomennasai again?”)

Ah well – it was good. The computer definitely is a moral boost – speed and distance wise. Worth every yen!
